What is Pilates?
The method originates from the work of the late Josef Pilates. A frail child, he studied many forms of physical fitness to formulate a system that worked on his own body. His fitness studio in New York set up in the late 1920s lured the ‘elite’ of the city. All were attracted to a workout that recognised individual needs, built strength without bulk, balanced strength with flexibility and achieved the perfect harmony between mind and muscle.
How does Pilates work?
Pilates involves both mental and physical training to achieve above all an awareness and control of the body and its movement. Through a balanced workout, the core postural muscles are strengthened, muscle imbalances are corrected and the body is realigned to look longer and leaner all resulting in more efficient movement. Pilates avoids muscle and ligament damage sometimes associated with other regimes. Proving its safe and effective approach the Pilates method has, throughout the last decade, been integrated into the worlds of sport, medicine and health and fitness.
Who is Pilates suitable for?
Pilates is suitable for male and female, and will suit any level of fitness. It is recommended as a means of rehabilitation, is suitable for back sufferers and is a safe and effective way to exercise during and after pregnancy. It is ideal for sports people wishing to enhance their performance and indeed anyone wanting to improve their fitness, posture and appearance. Pilates can help with back pain and even with stress related illnesses.
